It depends on the intended purpose but yes, hardwood sleepers have a number of advantages over softwood. For example, they're more durable, water-resistant, and resistant to decay. They do not need any chemical treatment. For more information on hardwood vs. softwood sleepers, read this guide.
Tanalised timber or pressure-treated timber is timber that has been treated with a special chemical preservative called Tanalith or Tanatone, in order to make them more resilient to prolonged outdoor exposure.

From classic horizontal and vertical fences to modern combinations with stone gabion fences or climbers, there are countless designs and ways to incorporate timber into your fence.

How to make a fence?
To build closeboard fencing with feather edge boards, you need feather edge fence boards, gravel boards, and arris rails, as well as annular ring nails for the structure and for the feather edge boards. After determining the location and clearing the area, notch your fence posts and set the first one in position, filling the hole with cement. Dig holes and set the remaining posts. Then, attach your arris rails and gravel boards. Then, take your first feather edge board and sit it on the gravel board with the thick edge flush with the left face of your first post. Nail it in position. Place the next boards, overlapping by 25mm and spacing them evenly. Check the vertical levels every 4-5 boards. Finally, you can add a counter rail and capping rails.
Decking boards made from quality timber result in a beautiful deck that will serve you well for years to come. We provide a range of grooved, smooth, and reversible deck boards to choose from. They're all made from sustainably sourced Nordic Spruce and Larch, both known for their impressive dimensional stability.
A one-time delivery fee will be applied based on your shipping postcode. It's a flat charge regardless of the number and quantity of products you add from the Larch category. Delivery details available here.
One of the greatest benefits of larch decking is its durability. Its high resin content makes it less susceptible to rot and insects, while the high density means it's harder than other softwoods and even some hardwoods. At the same time, larch is easy to work with and affordable. Learn more in our article here.
How many deck boards do I need?
To determine how many boards to get, you need to calculate the area of your future deck. Multiply its length by the width. Don't forget to account for any stairs. Then, decide on the deck board sizeto use depending on your desired deck size and board orientation. Remember that the fewer cuts, the better. Next, calculate the surface of each board by multiplying the length of the board by its width. Finally, divide the area of your deck by the board area. To calculate even more precisely, you can calculate board spacing and subtract it from the total area. To do so, multiply 3mm spacing by the number of boards on your deck minus 2 (because the first and last boards won’t have a gap on one side). Multiplying the number you get by the length of your deck to get the total spacing. Note, however, that you'll need some extra boards in case of mishaps, waste, or offcuts. Add about 10% to 15% to cover such mistakes.

Treated sleepers are a popular choice among gardeners and homeowners. From raised beds, borders, and water features to patios, pergolas, or garden steps, they are used in numerous landscaping and gardening projects.
Softwood sleepers are more cost-effective than their hardwood counterparts. They are also lighter and easier to handle and very rarely have dimensional defects or knots. At the same time, these sleepers are pressure-treated, which extends their life span and improves rot resistance. In fact, these treated garden sleepers will last 10 years and even more with proper use and care.
While green and brown softwood sleepers differ in appearance and colour, they are in fact the same sleeper in different treatment colours, all made from UK grown timber and with sustainable forestry practices. Sleepers treated with Tanalith E are safe for use by children and pets. We believe that purchasing your timber from a reputable source is a reliable investment for years to come. At Luxury Wood, we focus on high-quality products that we can sell with pride. If you need help choosing the most suitable type of wood for your outdoor area, visit this guide. FAQ
How long do treated sleepers last?
Our treated softwood sleepers are guaranteed to last 10 years. Their life can be extended further by applying suitable decking oils or wood preservatives. Some people apply wood dyes to their sleepers to change the tint.
Do all green treated sleepers turn grey?
All softwood timber will go through a gradual change in colour over time and that's a natural process, but they will not grey like Oak, per se. You can adopt some simple measures to retain the colour of softwood sleepers. For example, you can wash them and apply a layer of wood preserving stains once a year for a return of the deeper colour. This is useful especially before wet and cold winter months. Such maintenance will prolong the effects of the pressure treatment and keep the wood looking its best.
Oak Versus Softwood Sleepers?
People often ask, are Oak or Softwood sleepers better? The key thing to remember is that Oak is a hardwood, and will not need treating, however Oak is scarce and therefore it is more expensive. Softwood however is more economical, and due to technologies in wood preservation treatments it will usually last as long as the Oak anyway. The key thing to remember is that Oak, being from a hardwood tree, will have more knots and sometimes minor splits or bark, although some people prefer this for the characterful appearance.
Rainscreen façade cladding is an excellent way to protect your building from the elements. They're easy to install and maintain and used for newly built projects, as well as for refurbishments. A popular choice of material for many commercial and private projects, timber offers sustainability and effectiveness.
Larch in particular makes excellent rainscreen cladding timber due to its natural properties such as resilience, insect resistance, and scratch resistance. Luxury Wood offers several convenient choices in this category.
What is rainscreen cladding?
Rainscreen (a.k.a. rainshield) cladding is an outer layer attached to a building, intended to protect it from harsh weather conditions such as snow, rain, wind, frosts, and sunlight. It sits away from a building's exterior wall, creating a protective air cavity.
What makes rainscreen cladding systems effective?
A good rainscreen needs to control and manage nature's elements. Thus, it has several components: cladding, vented air space, insulation, air barrier, and the bearing wall of the building. The vented air cavity promotes residual water drainage and airflow behind the wall panel. The insulation on the exterior side of the air barrier decreases the heat flow. The air barrier is meant to stop any residual amounts of water that bypass the external cladding by letting it drain or evaporate. Vertical rainscreen battens that have channels allow cross-ventilation between the cavities.
What types of rainscreen cladding are there?
There are three types of systems:
- Vented and pressure-equalised: Used on tall commercial buildings. They prevent moisture from entering into the air gap between the façade and the internal structure. This is done by sealing the top section of the façade and creating separate ventilation cavities.
- Drained and vented - Feature an open cavity at the top (protected with an overhang) and one at the bottom. They provide drainage and a moisture barrier is used to protect the building.
- Vented: Used for building 1-4 stories high. A cavity open at the bottom of the façade provides drainage but no ventilation. The warmth in the cavity helps water condense and drain.
